διαφοροποίηση;
Abstract
It is known not only to the educational world and scientific community, but also to
the public that the learning outcomes and students’ achievements vary widely.
However, what are the representations of the professionals who are assigned to
transmit the knowledge to the younger generations about the factors that provoke this
differentiation?
This is exactly the purpose of this work. More specifically, this study has the aim
to explore the representations of the teachers regarding the factors that contribute to
the diversification of learning outcomes and achievements, in order to highlight the
system of rationalization and interpretation adopted by teachers.
The theoretical frame of the study consists of a brief bibliographic research on the
issue of educational inequality, approaching it in terms of socio-historical and
scientific view, but also on the social representation theory which draws upon for
supporting the research.
The research section of the treatise includes an investigation from which
information was gathered from twelve teachers who were teaching in the school year
2011-12 in the 5th or 6th year of primary schools in the Corinthian Prefecture. The
methodology chosen for the research was the qualitative via semi-structured
interviews.
The survey found that:
a) Teachers seem to recognize the factors which are responsible for the
educational inequality and school failure, however they often make
deterministic interpretations of the phenomenon of educational inequality and
school failure (either sociological or psychological), incriminating either the
child or the family and justifying the school.
b) They attribute greater importance to the family’s cultural capital, its
socialization practices and its relationship with the school and knowledge than
its economic capital.
c) The idea of egalitarianism and social integration of the weak and underprivileged
students coexists in their social representations with the separation
according to their learning abilities.
d) Everyone recognizes their personal involvement in the issue of educational
inequality, but both their views on the possibility of positive intervention and
taking action are recorded on a continuum.
e) They recognize the pathologies of the educational system and propose
interesting solutions for improvement. However, in many cases, as on the
issue of granting more freedom to the teacher, their representations also
include elements of neoliberal discourse.
f) The willingness to combat educational inequality and school failure coexists
with careful categorization of students. However, the diligence for meritocracy
often gives way to a desire to strengthen the weak student or the parental
pressure. In each case, their pedagogical practices contain many
contradictions, since they sometimes take compensatory action and sometimes
intensify inequalities.
g) The degree of resilience or resistance to the proposed changes varies, with the
older teachers to be more modest and more critical towards innovations.
