| dc.description.abstracttranslated | The present thesis was conducted in the frame of the Interdepartmental and Interuniversity Post Graduate Program in Philosophy - direction "Ethics". Purpose of this thesis is the presentation and critical recording of the particularly pronounced ethical problems arisen due to the biomedical developments in Medically Assisted Reproduction field. The thesis consists of three parts. In the first part, an attempt of Bioethics demarcation is performed, which is the cognitive area that Medically Assisted Reproduction is incorporated to. Secondly, the recording of Bioethics method as well as the basic principles by which Bioethics is governed are presented and discussed. Thirdly, a correlation of Bioethics and Human Rights is followed and finally, a presentation of the criticism that Bioethics has been accepted is included. In the second part, a detailed description of the distinct Medically Assisted Reproduction methods is presented, providing in parallel medical and historical evidences for each specific reproduction technique. In the third part, the right to acquire offspring is initially approached together with a presentation that touches upon the issue of bodies that can have the above mentioned right. Then, in order to attempt record the moral dilemmas arising from the assistance on human reproduction; a hypothetical case of interest in six distinct moral dilemmas classes are analyzed in detail, under the “penetrating lens” of philosophy. In particular, the six distinct classes of ethical problems are the following: • Problems relating to general discussions on moral status. • Problems relating to the particular nature and moral «status» of the embryo in vitro. • The creation ... "alternative" family forms. • The issue of surrogacy in the study of the carrier and the substitute mother. • The donation of genetic material and the subsequent problems on donor anonymity, and commercialization of genetic material. • Preimplantation genetic diagnosis as an opening in eugenics. The critical appraisal of Medically Assisted Reproduction and the ethical issues presented in the present thesis lead to the general conclusion that morality is a personal affair for each one of us.
