Abstract
During the last decades the phenomenon of immigration has also changed the structure of school classrooms in Greece. Multiculturalism and multilingualism demand changes in teaching material aiming at pupils' smoother integration not only in the educational but also in the social environment. It goes without saying that all native or non-native Greek speaking pupils, should feel equal members of a social group which respects all members needs and readapts its goals depending on the different characteristics of its socially, linguistically or religiously mixed population. Definitely, pupils acquire their first role models, values and ways of behaviour at school. Our aim is to examine the extent to which diversity is integrated and used in the current elementary school language textbooks. We are interested in the content analysis and comparative study of textbooks used for teaching Greek and minority pupils in Western Thrace. How the concepts of equality, solidarity and peaceful coexistence are displayed and cultivated by both educational systems of our country? The results showed that the two school language textbooks follow different educational models in dealing with immigrants and ethnic minority pupils.
