Abstract
This dissertation attempts to explore how the Greek school manages the issue of sexual orientation and diversity from the perspective of the LGBT minority. Its purpose is to record the LGBT minority experience (students and teachers) about how the LGBT students are affected both in terms of school performance and in terms of social relationships that form during their school studies under the domination of hegemonic heterosexual discourse and heterosexual matrix. At the same time, it describes the views of LGBT teachers about how the Greek school handles this sensitive student minority (through what educational policies and actions) and about how they themselves manage the two sides of their identity (on the one hand, the gay sexual identity and, on the other, their professional identity). The study is based on a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the data shows that the difference in sexual identity and performance of gender, in a way that exceeds the heteronormative context of the Greek school, influences the school career of LGBT students both at the level of school performance and at the social and emotional level. Finally, the study highlights the lack of specialized educational policies to recognize and accept sexual diversity, and the unavailability of appropriate training for teachers. It is argued, that these two factors, especially, contribute to the strengthening of the dominance of the hegemonic heterosexual discourse both inside and outside schools.
