Abstract
Purpose: To assess the knowledge and perceptions of physicians regarding generic drugs and how these determine their attitude in prescribing. To investigate also any relation between these perceptions and socioeconomic characteristics and search for factors that can modify them.
Material: The study population consisted of doctors who worked in Southeastern Peloponnese ( mainly in prefecture of Laconia) and in the area of Attica both in private and public sector.
Methods: The study was conducted with a validated questionnaire in Greek language (which also included socioeconomic and demographic data). The variable “perceptions for generics” was quantified by means of a 5-point Likert scale. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, version 22.0).
Results: 151 physicians participated in the study (response rate: 60,4%). Physicians consider generics as equally effective and safe compared to branded drugs (77,1% and 64,3% of them respectively), but they don’t prescribe often generics instead of branded drugs. They are more negative when it comes to the quality of generics and to issues of pharmacovigilance and they are against the automatic substitution process. Older phycisians have more positive opinion on generics and physicians that receive branded drugs for their own diseases have more negative attitude towards generics.
Conclusions: There are some issues on generics that divide doctors and that should be solved in order to achieve a wider acceptance for generics.
