(1988), ο Matheson (2004), η Kasimati (2003) και οι Gratton, Shibli και Coleman,
Abstract
The 27th Athens Classic Marathon of 2009 was held on 8th November 2009, by
SEGAS and Organizational Committee. The purpose of this study is to examine the
economic impact, that possibly created due to this particular event in the city.
Economic impact is defined as the net change in the local economy which can be
directly attributable to the staging of a particular event (Turco & Kelsey, 1992) and
involves estimating the additional expenditure from outside sources, generated in the
local economy as the result of the event. Based on primary research, which uses the
LIRC methology (2002), 798 self-completion questionnaires were collected on three
consecutive days (the day that the event was hold, and two days before it, in the
exhibition ATHENS CLASSIC MARATHON) by different types of visitors;
competitors, athletes delegates, spectators, media, sponsors, conference participants
and volunteers. The organizational budget is funded by government subsidies,
sponsorships and registration fees. The portion of organizational spend originating
from outside sources and spent in the local economy is added to economy impact. In
this specific study, the expenditure is calculated if from 200.000,00€ which flown in
the city as registration fees of foreign athletes, deduct the amount of 90.000,00 €
which evaded from city through the prizes of foreign athletes and the cost of inviting
and hosting top athletes. Therefore the organizational expenditure from the external
resources rises to 110.000,00€. Without accounting the results using the multiplier
effect, taking under consideration researchers as Hunter (1988), Matheson (2004),
Kasimati (2003) and Gratton, Shibli and Coleman (2006) who claim that multiplier is
a measuring unit strongly controversial, the total economic contribution, was
3.176.448,83€. That amount forms eventual the Direct Economic Impact of 2009
Athens Classic Marathon, in which methological choosed to stop the research because
that way the reliability of primary research’s results is being secured.
