The contemporary role of education plays a crucial role in employment and acts as an informal procedure for distributing students in the social and professional hierarchy. The academic degrees operate as credentials in the social and working context (Collins, 1979), forcing citizens to get overeducated, to acquire multiple knowledge, to possess increased diplomas and qualifications, without, however, ensuring them a job in the labor market. Taken for granted the massification of higher education (Marginson, 2016) and the upward expansion of the educated, the employment concern after the schooling period is universal, as the vested skills do not meet the requirements of labor market and affecting mainly the younger candidates. The phenomenon of overeducation constitutes a macroeconomic imbalance, which resulted in the loss of large quantities of human resources and low social mobility. At the same time, it is indissolubly linked to the labor mismatches, implying the degraded investment of education (Groot & Maassen Brink Van Den, 2000), which is incompatible with the revised concept of today's framework, ie employability, and the reproduction of inequality (Patrinos et al., 2009). The concept of overeducation on one hand has been influenced by economists' views as they link the phenomenon to income levels and on the other hand, sociologists’ evaluations, as overeducation affects the social structure, the authority and the job , thus led to downgradation of the social class of individuals (Aberg, 2003). Theorists and commentators associate the phenomenon with several variables such as skill mismatch, family background, the level of study and additionally they assess how the education system works, what the students and parents expect, the weak modernization of the labor market, the impact of lifelong learning, the rise of immigration, the economic downturn, the international competition and finally the unemployment. On the whole the paper highlights the consequences and the causes of overeducation and provides comprehensive information, assessing the socio-economic development and the current trends of the phenomenon in Greece in the current crisis. The compilation and analysis of statistical data and the institutional evaluations as well of this phenomenon in the international and Greek context helps to underline the causes and factors that have caused the phenomenon to emerge, and final the necessity for establishing effective actions and policies.el
