Abstract
Background: Changes happen and determine our evolution. The resistance that employees bring against organizations’ efforts to change cripples hopes for survival and growth.
Aim: Psychometric properties of the Greek translation of the Resistance to Change scale (RTC)
Material and Method: Data were collected from 600 under- and post-graduate students of three different Greek Institutions. The convergent validity of the scale was examined with a battery of self-reported, validated into Greek language, questionnaires. Internal consistency and construct validity were also examined.
Results: Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the overall scale was 0.80. Confirmatory Factor Analyses verified the scale’s initial structure of the four factors, each reflecting a subscale (Routine seeking, Emotional reaction, Short-term focus, Cognitive rigidity), as well as the initial theory of first-order factors loading into a second-order one, and combined forming a composite RTC score. The interclass correlations showed weak yet statistically significant results.
Conclusions: A tool capable of assessing directly the trait of resistance can act as a breakthrough for managers. Overall, results indicate that the Greek version of the RTC scale is a valid and reliable tool for assessing the trait of resistance to change in the Greek population. More than that, the present study contributes to the confirmation of the dispositional character of resistance.
