Abstract
The disasters and emergencies disrupt the balance between needs and available instruments and supplies. Hospitals worldwide are involved in dealing with such crises. The key to successful management is to be well prepared . To achieve this requires the existence of a simple, realistic and well-tested preparedness plan . The emergency preparedness refers to minimizing the negative impacts on health and safety of individuals, but also the integrity and operation of structures and systems. The aim of the study is to investigate the level of preparedness and the views of healthcare staff, of a regional hospital, General Hospital of Sparta, in relation to the emergencies and natural disasters. Material-Methods of data collection was the completion of questionnaires by the permanent staff of the General Hospital of Sparta (N = 210). The questionnaires included demographic data and other variables related to knowledge of project management crisis and views on the assessment of hospital preparedness. Results The 61.4% of staff believes that the hospital does not have experience in dealing with natural disaster or emergency or epidemic. The vast majority (75.7%) has not participated in exercise, information or education. Although the 'Perseus' has been activated in 2007 (August) at fires ,only 8.6% reported knowledge of the plan and only 17.6% know what to do in the event of natural disaster or emergency. Therefore the vast majority of staff (90%) would like to learn how to be properly prepared. Conclusions The crisis management plans for hospitals are not up to date and are not known to all staff. There is an urgent need for adequate preparation. Further studies and actions to highlight the issue and the awareness of health personnel.
