| el |

dc.description.abstracttranslated | This research essay aims to address the strategic, political and economic dimensions, of Greek-Yugoslav relations, and integrate them in the context of the Cold War. After the end of World War II, Europe was divided into two “worlds” and a new reality was formed, the Cold War. The Greek Civil War was the first expression of the Cold War. In addition to the ideological conflict it expressed the competition of geostrategic interests in the wider Mediterranean region. Until the rift between Tito and Stalin (1948), Yugoslavia was a supporter of the forces of the Democratic Army, while American intervention in the civil war on the side of the Greek government and National Army determined the course of the war and the country’s orientation towards the West. The break between Yugoslavia and the USSR contributed to Yugoslavia’s shift towards the West, but the communist orientation of the country created the conditions for a “third way” between East West. Tito’s “third way” and political choices contributed decisively to the creation of the Non-Aligned Movement and to the firm support of Greek positions on the Cyprus issue. Relations between Greece and Yugoslavia were affected by the course of relations between Yugoslavia and the USSR. In times of conflict, they led to closer relations, such as that of the Balkan Pact, while in times of rapprochement they contributed to the culmination of the conflict over the Macedonian issue. An issue that began with the creation of the FRM, and interpreted by Yugoslavia as a matter of identity, while by Greece as a matter of national security and territorial claims, and continued after its independence, during the dissolution of the FRY, and its recognition by the UN as FYROM. | el |
