| dc.description.abstract | Η παρούσα Μεταπτυχιακή Διπλωματική Εργασία εξετάζει τη βιώσιμη ανάπτυξη σε μικρές νησιωτικές κοινότητες, με μελέτη περίπτωσης το νησί της Τήλου. Στόχος της έρευνας είναι η ανάλυση του ρόλου της τοπικής αυτοδιοίκησης και της συμμετοχής της τοπικής κοινωνίας στην εφαρμογή καινοτόμων πολιτικών ενεργειακής μετάβασης και κυκλικής οικονομίας. Ειδικότερα, η εργασία εστιάζει στα έργα ενεργειακής αυτονομίας μέσω του ευρωπαϊκού προγράμματος TILOS και στη διαχείριση αποβλήτων μέσω της πρωτοβουλίας Just Go Zero. Η μεθοδολογική προσέγγιση περιλαμβάνει συνδυασμό ποσοτικής και ποιοτικής έρευνας. Συγκεκριμένα, χρησιμοποιήθηκε ερωτηματολόγιο με δείγμα κατοίκων του νησιού, καθώς και ημιδομημένες συνεντεύξεις με κατοίκους και με την Δήμαρχο Τήλου. Τα αποτελέσματα δείχνουν υψηλό επίπεδο κοινωνικής αποδοχής των δράσεων, ενίσχυση της περιβαλλοντικής συνείδησης και αυξημένη εμπιστοσύνη προς τη δημοτική αρχή. Παράλληλα, αναδεικνύονται προκλήσεις που σχετίζονται με την προσαρμογή των κατοίκων και τις θεσμικές δυσκολίες εφαρμογής. Η μελέτη καταλήγει στο συμπέρασμα ότι η Τήλος μπορεί να λειτουργήσει ως πρότυπο βιώσιμης ανάπτυξης για άλλες μικρές νησιωτικές κοινότητες, υπό την προϋπόθεση προσαρμογής των πολιτικών στις τοπικές ιδιαιτερότητες. | el |
| dc.description.abstracttranslated | This Master’s Thesis examines sustainable development in small island communities, focusing on the island of Tilos as a case study. The primary aim of the research is to analyze the role of local government and community participation in the implementation of innovative policies related to energy transition and circular economy. In particular, the study explores the energy autonomy achieved through the European TILOS project and the zero-waste initiative Just Go Zero, which have positioned Tilos as an international example of sustainable island development. The theoretical framework of the thesis is based on the concepts of sustainable development, islandness, energy transition, circular economy, and participatory environmental governance. Small islands face structural challenges such as geographical isolation, limited resources, high energy costs, and waste management difficulties. At the same time, their small scale allows for the implementation of pilot projects and innovative solutions that can be evaluated and replicated elsewhere. The methodological approach combines quantitative and qualitative research methods. A structured questionnaire was distributed to residents of Tilos in order to assess their level of awareness, acceptance, and perceived impacts of the implemented initiatives. The questionnaire results were analyzed using descriptive statistics. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with local residents and with the Mayor of Tilos, aiming to capture in-depth perspectives on social participation, governance, challenges, and future prospects. The mixed-methods approach allowed for triangulation of data and a more comprehensive understanding of the case study. The findings indicate a high level of social acceptance of both the TILOS energy project and the Just Go Zero waste management initiative. Most residents perceive positive social, environmental, and economic impacts, particularly in terms of improved quality of life, environmental protection, and international visibility of the island. The results also highlight strong trust in the local government’s capacity to design and implement sustainable development policies. Nevertheless, certain challenges were identified, including initial resistance to change, the need for continuous information and education, and institutional and financial constraints. Based on the analysis, the thesis argues that the Tilos model can serve as a replicable example for other small islands, provided that policies are adapted to local characteristics, supported by strong political will, and combined with active community engagement. The study contributes to the academic literature on sustainable island development and offers policy recommendations for local and national authorities aiming to promote sustainability in insular regions. | el |
