Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the changes in family formation in the post-modern Europe of the 21st century as well as in Greece during the crisis, the challenges and risks families face today, as well as future prospects and trends. Trends in family life such as the decline in family size and diversities in family structures, continue without let up down to the dawn of the new millennium although differentiations are noticed in tempo, intensity and the time period they took place. At the same time, the on-going economic crisis afflicting Greece seems to have an impact on decisions concerning family formation. At this crucial time, families in Greece have operated as a protection mechanism for their unemployed members by remaining the primary source of their income. The risk of poverty and social exclusion still remains to be a profound threat for families in Europe as well as Greece; one-parent families as well as households with low work intensity face especially a higher risk of poverty. Future estimations point out that current trends are going to remain for the years to come, thus creating a challenge – the challenge to adapt an effective social policy mix aiming towards reducing unjustified inequalities in societies, strengthening the social safety net as well as redistributing social welfare with justice.
