Abstract
The research that you are reading, deals with the phenomenon of immigrants’
social integration and its characteristics. In a second level, it is investigated whether
or not social integration exists for the members of the selected focus group. The focus
group is consisted of immigrants from Pakistan who live in Aliartos, Viotia. The
factors that affect social integration vary. Indicatively, some factors could be legal
status, sex, origin, religion, personal approach of the immigrants, as well as
bidirectional relationships that are formed with the local community. We can find
expressions of social integration in equal access of immigrants and aboriginal
population to goods and services. Successful integration means: equal participation in
social, economical, cultural and political life of the country with parallel mutual
respect for the different cultural models (language and religion), social acceptance
from the local community, harmonious and creative coexistence of the immigrant and
aboriginal population, participation of the foreignersindividually
or collectivelyto
the institutions and the possibility, through them, to affect decisions that are related to
their interests (Emke - Poulopoulou). Social integration is not a lineal process. The
duration and ways, in which it evolves, varies between different communities and
occasions. The research that took place was qualitive. There were held six
halfstructured
in depth interviews, with the assistance of an interpreter when needed.
