Abstract
The current thesis examines the basic factors that affect wages and wage
inequalities based on an analysis of wage data collected from Greece. The
theoretical part reviews international bibliography concerning the defining factors
of wages and wage inequalities and basic theories as well as empiric studies from
the USA and Europe are taken into consideration. Moreover, this thesis assesses to
what extent extraneous factors (such as labour market institutions and
globalisation) and employee's personal characteristics (sex, age, nationality,
education, working experience, family condition and skills) influence wages and
wage inequalities both between employees of a country and between different
countries.
Following is the inquiring part of the thesis, where the above mentioned
theories and empiric studies are supplemented, rejected or verified based on the
data from Greece. The size and the tendency of wage inequalities in Greece is
analysed based on wage data from period 2004-2006, collected from a sample of
1673 employees occupied in three branches, food-beverage, information
technology and hotels in Central Macedonia. The basic conclusion is that real
wages are very close to basic wages (as a percentage of 70%) and wage
inequalities reach 22% according to Gini coefficient. In the latter part, the effect
degree of employee characteristics and firm size on wage is appreciated with the
method of multiple regression. The final conclusion is that wage variation can be
attributed at a percentage of almost 40% to employee and firm characteristics and
that the most important defining factors are job specification and age.
