Abstract
The purpose of this research is to examine the professional risk by the
nursing staff from the use of sharps, such as syringes, and exposure to biological
fluids such as blood, in the hospital "KAT".
Material and Methods: The data collected refer to the period 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2011.
These data relate to 89 accidents occurred at the General Hospital of Attica "KAT"
and are based on data that have already been collected by the Commission of Hospital
Infections.
Results: Most accidents reported by women, nurses, aged 31 to 40 years, during the
morning shift from 8:00 am to 16:00 pm, while the majority of the accidents occurred
in the surgery and anesthesia department. Most accidents that were recorded came
from a contaminated sharp, which was the needle while trying to reposition the lid
thereof, at the left and right indicator.
Conclusions: The majority of the employees and the management follow the very
basic safety rules, but they do not take more precautions and countermeasures for the
accidents. The employees should be more informed about the risks they face and the
precautionary measures.
